Grass roots permaculture in Gisagara

What started out as a forest garden project at Save school, Gisagara, Southern District Rwanda is evolving into a network of women determined to use permaculture design to transform their own communities. Adressing issues of food security, personal support and development and sexual health the group brings together Women and girls from the district, including teachers, students and local active individuals wanting to both learn and contribute.

Group leader and founder Rose Nibagwire said recently “the group is about actively including women, not excluding men, we can all learn togehter. There are many female led households needing support with basics like nutrition and health and many of the girls at the school come from vulnerable backgrounds and low educational standards. Also due to economic pressures and domestic responsibilites many young women do not get to complete their education, Of course permaculture is about building soils and contributing to local food security but for many of those involved it is also about finding a supportive environment where where can learn and also gain personal confidence.
