S39 academy members contributed their stories to three of the case studies covered by the Scottish Universities Insight Institute’s study into community gardens around the world.
Thanks to
- PermoAfrica Kenya
- Rwandan Womens Permaculture
- Eastern Uganda Permaculture
for your excellent contributions to this study. It is really vital to show the potentials and achievements of these projects and they point to a way forward for many communities.
The S39 Academy is supported by Permaculture Association, Britain, and Arkleton Trust. Previously we have had support form the Wales for Africa program.
We are a fully independent enterprise building a peer to peer support network for those working on the permaculture front line. The Academy is a partnership between Sector39 and practitioners and students of permaculture who we have worked with trained, and who want to deepen that relationship. We want to tell many more of these kinds of stories, of ordinary people around the world, organising through community growing to create positive change.

Very proud to see 3 examples from our friends in East Africa standing along side these other wonderful projects, from around the world. In our experience, community gardening is a powerful tool for bringing people together and once you have achieved that it creates a whole new set of possibilities. Using organic principles tune you into nature very quickly, as you develop an empathy for the soil and the magical transition in living plants and all that is in the garden. How else can we face climate change, economic uncertainty and everything else, without a strong local community as well as a vibrant local food economy? There are many lessons to be learned here.
